What is YouTube Highlights?

When a visitor clicks on your YouTube link, what happens next is you get the option to either leave a comment on the video that was linked, or you can “UFOs Over Dallas Texas”, which is my favorite. In my case, I’ll leave a YouTube Link in my name and description box. The other visitors that click on that link will see my name and website address. This can be great for getting back links for articles I’ve written.

What is a YouTube Highlighted Comment? A YouTube Highlighted Comment is a comment that appears on the video you’re viewing after clicking on the “Get Video” button at the top of the page. It is usually placed right at the end of the video; sometimes within the video, too. (I just tested this on my channel). You can add a link to your website here, but it is not necessary.

How do you make a YouTube Highlighted Comment? You follow the same steps as with writing a blog entry. Create an article title and write your comments in a separate tab or window. Save all your articles as an mp3. Open up your audio player and listen to what you want to write.

What is a URL? If you’re familiar with the hyperlinks you can see below, those are few links that take you to a website. These websites are called hyperlinks. In your article, you’d have created a URL (which is just another term for a link).

When did I write all those comments? Usually I start by typing an article title and then a sentence or two of text about the article. Then I add a brief YouTube link at the bottom of the post so the reader can go check out my video. Sometimes I make it a two-line link or one long one but it’s really up to you.

Where do I put the YouTube links? Put them wherever your reader will see them. They should be visible to your reader. If you’re writing for a blog site, you’d put the link at the very bottom of the post. If you’re commenting on a video, it would probably be located at the very top of the video. Either way, make sure your readers can easily find the link.

Why am I allowed to make a highlighted comment? Most of the time you’re not. Google has certain rules about what is a YouTube highlight. If your comment was removed, then you know why.

So now you know what a highlighted comment is and why and how they work. You also have a better understanding of what Google does with them so you know what to do to get your high-lighted comments approved. The biggest thing to remember is that you’re under no obligation to use the high-lights. Google wants your comments to be useful to your readers so if you think a high-lighted comment could help you accomplish that, then by all means do it. Just make sure you don’t go over the line and start spamming other people’s videos with them.

Now that we know what a YouTube high-lighted comment is and what it’s used for, let’s talk about the pros and cons. The biggest pro is probably the fact that it makes your video look better. High-lights are much easier on the eyes than having to read the whole comment. The biggest con is that Google will probably put a limit on how many you can use at one time. That in itself may be enough to discourage some from using them too much.

A third pro is the fact that it is more personal. Google loves comments that tell a story, contain links, or even reveal some inside information about the person who left the comment. This personal touch makes the high-lighted link even more appealing to the reader. The only real con is that you have to be strategic about where you put the high-lighted links.

There are a few ways you can use what is a YouTube highlight to your advantage. You can include the high-link in the body of the text but also make sure you put it in bold. The link should be somewhere that the reader will see it first when they search for your video. You can also try using it in the title or in the subtitles if you want the viewer to see it right away. It is also a good idea to try and include it in your video descriptions, as well.

As with everything on the Internet, what is a YouTube highlight is up for debate. Some people think they are helpful, while others think they are a waste of space. If you use them correctly, however, they can be very effective at helping you get recognized on YouTube. Just remember that you should only use them as a last resort, and not every single comment you post will result in a high-lighted comment.
